I wonder why the Labour (centre-left) government put the apology in The Telegraph (a pretty right-wing paper).
Also, I am very glad this happened. I went to the University of Manchester, where Turing worked for a while, and although we had some celebrations of him, he wasn’t mentioned all that much in the CS department and I know his work was talked down within the department after he died. I can only assume that he faced discrimination within the department while he was alive, too.
On the bright side, the Maths department wisely named their whole building after him in 2007, two years before Gordon Brown issued an official apology. The city also features a nice statue of Turing in a park next to the gay village and every year academics from the university leave flowers there on the memorial of his death.
