    This is great. I like the emphasis on the inherent dangers of keeping large amounts of personal data hanging around, and the call back to the precedents set by librarians under the Patriot Act.

    I’ve been talking up the idea of datensparsamkeit to anyone who will listen (most won’t) for a while now. It’s a tough sell in the age of big data and cheap storage. Everyone is afraid of discarding something that might come in handy one day, but that is the hoarder’s mentality: to see only the costs of loss but not the costs of hanging on to something that you don’t need.
