It’s a shame nobody can ever truly harness the power of the Cell, because it should be able to seriously compete with modern amd64 processors.
Pity it wouldn’t be completing with modern amd64 processors then, but with GPU’s. Wikipedia puts the Cell’s FPU compute power at about 180 GFLOPS, and the Radeon 2900 GT, which looks about equivalent in era and process node and which supports programmable shaders, at 288 GFLOPS.
Why would the PS3’s CPU be competing with GPUs?
Because most of those gigaflops are in dedicated SIMD coprocessors that are really good at crunching lots of vector math and kinda trash at everything else, like GPU’s are?
