Illumos is neat for sure. There are other BSD’s out there too.
When diving into the zfs deep-end I evaluated FreeNAS and OmniOS+nappit and settled on the latter. Solaris-derivatives natively play nicely with Windows permissions and nappit was ultimately easier to configure despite being much less polished.
I’m surprised more people don’t run this setup.
