Feel free to tell what you plan on doing this weekend and even ask for help or feedback.

Please keep in mind it’s more than OK to do nothing at all too!

My band is playing our second gig tonight, an hour of jazz at a local pub. I took the day off so I could be a nervous wreck about it without also stressing about getting no work done.

Saturday I’m going to a locally produced musical, to support friends.

Sunday I’m going to try to catch a local jazz band, on one of their monthly sets.

      Very musical weekend ahead!

      1. 12

I’ll admit that the events of this week leave me with too much dread to plan anything concrete for the weekend.

        1. 5

Traveling to sign a lease on a house!

Possibly embarking on writing Yet Another typechecker for Garnet, as is tradition. More likely, playing with my baby niece and hanging out with her parents. And their enormous white land-cloud of a doggo.

          1. 4

I adopted two cats this week so I’m building some cat trees.

I also have some ideas for making our test suite better at $work, so I want to do a little proof of concept since we have Monday off in the US.

            1. 4

I recently moved to Turin (again!) after a year abroad; the city has changed a lot during this year, so I may take some time to go to the Alps and do some hiking.

Other than that, I am still learning C in depth and writing my VM

              1. 3

So jealous about the mountains thing.

              2. 3

Yard sale/tag sale. Lots of board games and books. Wish xe luck.

                1. 3

I’ve never actually used ruby on rails (not much of a ruby guy generally) but the 8.0.0 release has interested me enough that I think I’ll run through a couple of tutorials on the weekend.

                  1. 3

I’ve been reading a Chinese web novel for a while now, and I’m looking to finish it during the weekend. It’s been a huge time-sink for me (2400+ chapters, 10000+ pages) but I love the storyline and might consider reading the sequel sometime next year.

Other than that, I’ve been water fasting during the week and have a lot of surplus energy, so I’ll be doing a lot of physical activity.

                    1. 3

Reading “An Introduction to Programming in Emacs Lisp”.

                      1. 2

Spend a little bit of time updating my “Demystifying secure NFS” post after the helpful advice from the previous thread here (https://lobste.rs/s/7klzqj/demystifying_secure_nfs). And then trying to pick up some work I was doing on EndBASIC late last month. Other than kids stuff, yard work, etc…

                        1. 2

Making a dent in my gunpla backlog, date night, and writing.

On the less fun side of things, documenting the current interior damage to the flat from exterior works so when that work finishes, the interior can be fixed.

                          1. 2

Good luck! Looking forward to assembling xir remaining Gundam kits. Xe were also given a Gundam gunpla by a total stranger last night after xe showed curiosity for his WIP storefront. Go figure!

                          2. 2

I’ve started reading Red Mars by KSR, I’ll be playing some pool, and I’ll be working on building a Rails/Postgres admin app that ingests my 1500+ TIL posts so that I can start serving them via API to a Next.js frontend.

                            1. 1

How are you finding Red Mars? It holds the dubious distinction as the only sci-fi novel I’ve started but never finished. I don’t remember fully why, because this was in 2017 and I didn’t leave myself any notes, but I remember it was an audible version so the narrator may have been a factor. 🤷🏼‍♂️

                              1. 1

Only like 120 pages in, so reserving judgement. I will say the story develops slowly, but maybe that is just KSR’s style.

                            2. 2

I’m either continuing to bang my head against the wall with Dioxus or I’m going to pick up Svelte for this frontend I’m building. You can vote on it here: https://rls.social/@alper/113447414509353304

Maybe I’ll have time this weekend to learn jj but I doubt it.

                              1. 2

Dinner this evening with a new friend who I’m excited to get to know better.

                                Over the weekend:

                                • Figuring out why one of the Raspberry Pis from my homelab k3s cluster went unresponsive
                                • Adding the ability to record draws in the “Magic The Gathering ELO-scoring” site that I’m building out for my playground
                                1. 1

I’m getting a Wii from marketplace tomorrow. I’ve tried emulating wii games on Dolphin but those that require motion controls are just waaaay too fiddly to play without the proper controllers. I’m really looking forward to playing some games I’ve been missing out on because of the motion controls. I’m also considering getting a Dolphin Bar to get the best of both worlds, now that I’m gonna have some original wii controllers to use it with.

I also started using my split ergo keyboard full time, because some of the cheap gateron blue knockoffs on my old 30 euro keyboard are not registering well anymore, and I really don’t feel like desoldering them… I think I’ll steal some ideas from the thumb cluster post that’s on the front page right now because the weird layout I hacked together is not working very well for me.

                                  1. 1

Xe switched to split keyboards years and years ago and will never look back. Hoping they work out great for you too!

                                  2. 1

                                    Maybe starting a chip8 emulator.

                                    1. 1

Just finished reading “The Dark Forest” this morning (of 3 body problem). This was a really special book.

Now playing with Telegram bot and Ryelang … basically turning Telegram in a Rye console (again) https://www.reddit.com/r/ryelang/comments/1gn7s53/rye_console_over_telegram/

Then working outside on the Cumaru terrace. Cumaru wood is supposed to last 50 years, so probably longer than I will, which is good news, I suppose :P

I am going to read “Tools for Conviviality (1973)” by Ivan Illich, The People I find amazing have mentioned It quite a few times.

                                          1. 1

Still doing some experiments on multiagent frameworks. I am planning to write detailed blog post about metagpt.

                                            1. 1

Reading “The Politics of Heroin” by Alfred McCoy

Spending some time working on my Swift package for generating guitar and scale diagrams.

Using cursor. I just got put on to cursor after 2 years of using copilot or just the straight chat interface. This IDE makes the experience so much better.

                                              Holiday present shopping.

I’ll be working on https://forestfriends.tech. The first issue was about system evals for LLMs. I’m gathering material for a second issue.

I’ll also be working on getting the incremental eval in a React-like pipeline builder working.

                                                1. 1

I made an entirely pointless website to exchange Pokemon TCG Pocket friend codes: https://poketcg.club/

                                                  1. 1

Apps that help one’s friends might be some of the most point-ful apps out there! If anything, we’re going to need a lot more of those over the next four-plus years here in the US. Gotta make our local communities that much more resilient and diverse.
