Marching cubes was patented and, worse, the original paper actually had an error in it in one of the cases. The marching tetrahedra algorithm was created as a simpler and non-patented version. Even though the patent is now expired, marching tetrahedra generally a better choice if you want to do isosurface extraction on a volumetric data set.
