The main problem of official twitter client and website is not ads (there are few ads and with not so poor quality), but facebookisms: out of order timeline, tweets from users I’m not subscribed to (just because someone liked them), “who to follow”, putting “trends” consisting of junk news in front of my nose.
the only way to make money is to grind up your users for advertising paste.
Well, no. You can simply ask users for money. It’s not going to produce THAT MUCH money, but it can just be enough for a service to sustain itself. The beauty of Fediverse is that it works best with many small to medium sized services, nobody actually needs that much money in the first place.

I would gladly put up with slightly more adds in exchange for fixing all these things, and giving me a more advanced filtering mechanism.
I would pay a small monthly fee to have all those things with no ads.

If they thought they could get away with it, they would certainly do both.
