What are you doing this week? Feel free to share!
Keep in mind it’s OK to do nothing at all, too.
I’ve recently gotten into 18650 cells and building batteries. Currently, I’m just building a DIY battery pack for my Milwaukee tools. I ordered a plastic battery case off Ali express and I harvested some cells off an old scooter pack. I’ve got some spot welding and soldering to do. I have accumulated a lot of new tools for this hobby.
Slightly regretting my inability to plan anything way off in the future until it arrives a fortnight out. This time round I’ve got about 50% of my Day Skipper theory left to learn and the practical assessment is next week. Started the theory course last June, and the practical was so far away I didn’t bother planning it in. Also slightly underestimated just how much theory there was.
Also decided the second home server that’s unused needs SmartOS slapping on it to mirror the first one that’s in “production” and start sharing data/workloads between the two of them. Go with the setup I’ve already got and that’s working, rather than have it sit unused waiting for me to experiment with more setups. (Also I really should write that Terraform SmartOS provider I spiked up yonks ago.)
Getting ready to travel to SF for the first conference I’ve been to in person since 2018.
It’s a short week at work (yay for UK holidays), I’m continuing to build reliable backup/restore for the core of our business, on tech that kinda isn’t meant to be backed up… sigh.
At home (in between playing with my daughter) I’m continuing work on reimplementing Gmail from scratch (no existing mail server, etc) - as always, it’s a project that’s far too big for my free time. But what else am I going to do? Watch TV? Loving the non traditional approach so far - I think it might actually work well.
I’ve got the week off, and currently driving from east coast to west coast—about three hours—to visit a friend. It’s my first overnight stay away from family since early 2020 & I’ve forgotten how to pack for overnight stays. Thankfully I can fit my entire wardrobe in my camper van 😅
$work: it’s a rather busy week with lots of various things. We just received word a potential new hire has been offered a contract so that’s some good news. In the meantime it’s just taking out small fires left and right, sadly.
!$work: I’m going to create a dating profile this week, and I promised myself to not get disappointed when absolutely nothing comes out of it. I’m actually not really looking forward to it but my psychologist and friends told me to go for it as I’m feeling ready but not confident I’m going to have matches.
There’s always someone on the other side who thinks the same :)
Prototyping an Electron app to integrate with our existing python GTK application as part of a gradual effort to move towards web tech. Porting 1 (hopefully) simple window & seeing how it goes!
Currently the plan is to add a small flask server in the GTK app which will act as a “backend” to the electron app. I’m cautiously optimistic :fingers-crossed:
Are you aware of GTK broadway backend?
I think I vaguely saw it around
Its pretty impressive. I’m not sure it meets our usecase right now as we’re trying to completely to move to web eventually. The electron app is being built with being a web app with no local servers running.
It took a bit of effort to convince our team to write code (flask) that we will throw away, but this seems like the most incremental way to get where we wanna get. Its pretty wild to me, but so far its looking very doable!
Working on Persism - Adding support for where you might have multiple schema names in your database.
Aside from getting some general software maintenance stuff done, I seem to have blinked and missed the weekend. I guess I’m still working on the 2nd blog post from https://lobste.rs/s/ctlhhi/what_are_you_doing_this_week#c_6l62j9 :)
Apparently I just needed to neg myself a bit harder. Finally unblocked and got a draft done last night.
Working on my side-project to help me (and possibly others!) to keep their daily journal, to show how we grow and change over the years! I’m super happy I’m MVP-complete and it’s actually usable now.
