    Does anyone know why many printer companies like Xerox are so aggressively anti-consumer? What justification is there for covertly undermining customer privacy? Are they legally obligated to do it? Same question for scanners that reject documents with watermarks (like these), or even brick themselves.

      They’re not anti-consumer, you’re not their consumer. The technology is primarily sold to large enterprise clients who want this kind of auditing capability and it’s cheaper to leave in that remove, or to satisfy law enforcement. Affordable color laser printers led to a big wave of counterfeiting in the late 90s, no manufacturer wants to be seen as making tools for criminals or even with a negligent disregard for that abuse.
