Feel free to tell what you plan on doing this weekend and even ask for help or feedback.

Please keep in mind it’s more than OK to do nothing at all too!

Social Distancing isn’t a new answer here, right? :__)

Lots and lotsa gaming! And coding! The second Winter!

      Be positive. :)

I invite everyone to join our UT99/UT2004 discord https://discord.gg/QjvEvb and to join a game that’s still loved by many. If you are also part of a smaller community, please share your hangouts with us. It’s important there are people to talk to and have fun with in these times.

Edit: Other fun relatable communities are:

Want a fun challenge? Try beating my Devil Daggers score of 421 seconds.

      1. 1

That’s funny, I was just thinking about unreal tournament :) - Do people still play the monster hunter mode?

        1. 3

1 year ago I saw someone playing RPG yes. There are probably still guys.

If anyone is interested we could start a lobste.rs server(s). I don’t mind spinning up a droplet. Hopefully others can contribute some compute too.

        2. 1

Wait, wat? I used to be a big UT99 player. I may join you there!

          1. 2

I’m more of a UT2004 regular but UT99 is popular amongst the older ones. X)

            657 ;)

            1. 1

Hehe, that is ultra impressive. My goal is to beat the 500 mark. I will never beat you X)

              1. 1

I was stuck at about 496 for a while, but rather suddenly got that score. I did lots of practice directly on the gigapedes, the leviathan, and the orb. Which requires hacking the game, or using spawnsets (easier to setup but have much slower iteration time).

As for the rest of you, I heartily recommend Devil Daggers. It’s wildly fun. See if you can kill that big ol’ spider that spawns in at 40 seconds. (You will probably need to carefully watch your replays to figure out what is going on.)

                1. 1

Yep, the past 3 months I’ve been doing that too X) I can get there no problem in-game… those gigapedes are just a crazy wall of difficulty. I’ve been able to kill 2/3 quite frequently but not good enough.

            2. 1

Omg UT99 … loved that game! Too bad it still doesn’t run on Linux properly. :-(

              1. 1

It you refer to the simultaneous keypress issue, export XMODIFIERS="@im=null" will fix it.

            3. 5

Social distancimg except for a party on Saturday, so not exactly social distancing? Making tons of chocolate as part of prep for mass care packages. Organizing resources for friends who are suddenly doing wfh, or need extra help with social distancing or prepping.

              1. 1

Interesting idea making care packages for others! I’ve been thinking about doing this too… Are you taking any extra precautions to prevent viral spread while cooking?

                1. 1

I’m only making care packages with shelf-stable candy and letting them sit for three days before mailing. That’s about the maximum the virus can survive without a host.

              2. 4

Writing a react app to rotate fullscreen displays based on a remote manifest file for a status/tv dashboard target.

Basically, the target URL for the tvid redirector I made this week: https://git.eeqj.de/sneak/tvid

                1. 4

Just wrapping up the Rust book. Gonna launch a rocket soon thereafter. All this UT talk has me longing for the strange love mod to make a comeback.

                  1. 4

Washing my hands, throwing an end of the world party and running a quarter-marathon. Also prolog.

                    1. 4

Did all my prep work earlier this week, so going to a friend’s wedding out innawoods with my partner and then hunkering down with the friendlyhund.

                      1. 3

Social Distancing with the family. Board games? Lego? We’ll see how we keep the toddler’s entertained. :-)

                        1. 1

We bought a new Lego set for our daughter yesterday, since she had to stay home today (kids with a mild cold cannot go to school currently). She can spend a lot of time building with Lego and it’s definitely much better than too much screen time.

                          1. 1

This weekend, my girlfriend and I will, hopefully, finally put together one of the Overwatch LEGO sets we’ve had for a while.

                          2. 3

2D C99 Game Engine. Now 5700 LoC. I think I’m going to focus on making a fun demo program with it this weekend, like maybe a planet orbit simulator.

                            1. 3

Social distancing, possibly catching up on work during part of that time because I suspect I’ll have to adjust hours due to everyone being home for a couple weeks.

                              1. 3

Running an absurd amount, finishing some work on my desktop refresh, and cleaning my desk. Maybe some building/3D printing.

                                1. 1

Is this absurd amount equal to a marathon, by any chance?

                                  1. 1

Was actually planning on more and on a trail no less, but thanks to the chaos that was this week, wasn’t able to work up to it.

                                2. 3

Continuing to set up NixOS on my new (to me) X1 Yoga.

                                  1. 3

                                    Playing with NixOS

                                    1. 2

Taking it easy, hanging out with friends, hopefully cooking something delicious. Possibly gnaw on Rust gamedev or related things.

                                      1. 2

Maybe play some board games. Might assemble a LEGO set or two. Wrap up the Overwatch event. Maybe even make a dent in my personal email backlog.

                                        1. 2

Social Distancing, knitting, movies, walks outside, and a healthy amount of Pokemon!

                                          1. 2

Tuning into LibrePlanet 2020, held entirely online this year due to public health concerns with the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

                                            1. 2

This weekend, social distancing, spending time with my wife, and trying to work ahead of next week. Maybe a bit of Stardew valley

                                              1. 2

I’m sick so I will be staying home for the weekend.

                                                1. 2

I’ll be caring for my partner who seems to have a cough. Quite nervous about it being COVID19 as she’d fall into the vulnerable group as she has a compromised immune system. I’ll cook her some crepes for breakfast, and generally take care of her.

As she’ll be sick, that usually buys me some time to myself while she rests. I’ve been working on a static site generator in Clojure called “Anansi” which I’ll probably be boosting, I’ve had some ideas about how themes should feed back into HTML generation so need to work on that. I’ve started writing my first blog post on the internals of figwheel and what features it’s actually providing and how they work. I’ve always wondered this, ClojureScript is something of a magical black box.

If partner is up for it we’ll try and finish Unravel or something, also dependent on how close I feel safe being. If I’m sick, I can’t go out and get necessary supplies!

                                                  1. 2

Finishing up https://autosnoozer.com I build it and using it for ~3 months now. Converting those scripts to a fully-functional mobile which others can use to batch process emails.

                                                    1. 1

Gathering items for the coming storm and then cowering in fear of DIVOC and the 19 horsemen of the apocalypse. Really just stocking up on some food essentials, tonic water and doing the usual of sitting at home.

                                                      1. 1

                                                        Surviving coronavirus in Warsaw

                                                        1. 1

Planning a lab exercise for a terraform course.

                                                          1. 1

Hopefully kick out a little sample program in F# that uses reflection and compiler services to show how to create code static analysis tools. I don’t need much for the demo, maybe just list the symbols for a certain method and which ones are defined elsewhere in the code versus in a system library.

                                                            1. 1

Write a blog post, finish a book and use the remaining time (if there is any left) continue learning rust.

                                                              1. 1

Some stress-free coding on pet projects; bit of machining. And lots of reading.

                                                                1. 1

I feel a cold coming on, so I’m staying home. My symptoms don’t match up with coronavirus (no fever, just a runny nose and slight soreness in my throat), but I might try getting a test out of an abundance of caution.

My plan is to avoid people (more than I always do), re-read Camus’ “The Plague”, clean my apartment, and write some Lisp.

I want to create streamline vector visualizations of the path finding and obstacle avoidance used by units in games like Clash of Clans. The idea is to have a grid with obstacles and targets, and then trace the paths units would take if they were placed on a grid 20 pixels apart. Once that works, I might implement some variations, like moving obstacles and targets, units that repel or attract each other, etc. Not very original, but not something I’ve played with before.

                                                                  1. 1

I’m ripping out the remains of special-handling of modifiers that the programming language I’m contributing to had left, and replace them fully with annotations:

                                                                    @open @deprecated
class Person(let name: String, let age: Int)

While both @open and @deprecated look the same, @open (and 10 others) are hard-coded in the compiler, while @deprecated is defined in source code.

My goal is to remove as much of that special casing as possible, such that I can have real source code files with annotation definitions of things that were hard-coded before.

The idea is that the language does not need both modifiers and annotations, and turning everything into source-code definable entities, means that they are much easier to document and evolve! E. g. @deprecated has multiple parameters and lots of documentation.

                                                                    1. 1

I’m ripping out the remains of special-handling of modifiers that the programming language I’m contributing to had left, and replace them fully with annotations:

class Person(let name: String, let age: Int)

While both @open and @deprecated look the same, @open (and 10 others) are hard-coded in the compiler, while @deprecated is defined in source code.

My goal is to remove as much of that special casing as possible, such that I can have real source code files with annotation definitions of things that were hard-coded before.
