This is one of the best piece of journalistic writing Wired has ever produced, in my opinion. The narrative is exciting and the subject matter is quite avant-garde, in a good way. I had the pleasure of coming across it and reading it in the early 2000’s, and have since re-read it a few times.
It still amazes me to this day that we can create these long distance submarine communications cables that are (mostly) very durable from a material science/engineering perspective. You’d think they’d have to be thick as heck, but modern cables are only about 25mm in diameter! Very cool stuff :).
