Title. I think it could be cool. Any interest?
It sounds fun, but are we really missing a medium for drama between long-form comments and short-form IRC shitposting?
Shooting ideas you’re working on into the ether can be super nice. Especially for more conceptual things. Midway through a project, or a concept, and I just wanna throw it out there incase someone has something to add.
Plus it’s a better format for casual updates or following along with projects or people.
There is something similar already in the works technically. @3b is working on a patch for allowing lobsters over activitypub.
Oh so I didn’t mean like a way to view lobster.rs inside of Mastodon, I meant just a plain Mastodon instance populated by lobsters.
Eh perhaps? I’d bring it up with pushcx.
That sounds more interesting to me than what op suggested.
I’d be interested as well. Although, is it common practice to be part of more than one instance? I’m still just getting my feet wet with Mastodon. I’m in mastodon.technology atm.
It would be the first time I ever felt tempted to create a “home” mastodon account. :)
I’m not interested. I run my own instance and I like to take advantage of the federated architecture of “mastodon” (or any other activitypub server), being able to interact with people of multiple instances, without being isolated on a specific one.
Nevertheless, I do see some utility on that proposal, for example for people who do not have an account on the “fediverse” and would trust the admins of a lobsters instance more than the current existing ones.
I’ve technically scooped an invite to lobste.rs from a Mastodon mutual, so for me the journey was in the other direction. (I run the https://x0r.be Mastodon instance).
I think a lobste.rs instance would make sense, especially if the login/user accounts are unified under the hood so you could access both with the same login. I think even the 2FA part should be compatible as both lobste.rs and Mastodon use TOTP. One of the big things in the fediverse is multiple accounts, for diversity, multiple vantage points and to separate different topics.
That would be pretty neat.
I absolutely would.
I’d be very interested in this.
I’d be interested
Ask them on IRC. They’re doing the closest thing to it already.
I would also be interested.
I think it could be fun.
There are already plenty of programmers/tech people on mastodon; I wouldn’t gain much from yet another tech-focused instance.
OK, so I know this came up a ways back, but I was just having a conversation with someone on Mastodon, who’s being blocked for some reason unknown to both him and me by the admin of the instance I’m currently ‘living’ on (cybre.space).
And it occurred to me - Wouldn’t it be an interesting experiment to have the Lobste.rs Mastodon instance be based on the same principles of transparent moderation that the actual site is based on?
There are a couple of threads if you do a search where many of us list out our account(s) on various Fediverse instances. I have a list in my mastodon instance for “crustaceans” filled with accounts I found in those threads.
I don’t think a Lobster specific instance would be all that great an idea, although Lobster federation does seem pretty interesting.
