Pretty unfortunate timing for this thread, right when many people went on Easter holidays. The reason I say this is because I can’t coordinate with HR could we post anything about open roles.

      1. 1

Easter, Passover, and the middle of Ramadan. Probably not a good time for folks in any countries that organise public holidays on the basis of any Abrahamic religion.

Company: Oils (an open source project)

      Company site: https://www.oilshell.org/

Position: Python / Shell Language Engineer

      Location: REMOTE

      Description:

I have a slightly unusual job funded by a grant under https://nlnet.nl ! Everything about the job is flexible – think of it as an open source project where you happen to get paid.

The job is to help us polish OSH, which is “the most bash-compatible shell by a mile”. This will pave the way for YSH, a new shell influenced by Python/JS/Ruby.

It’s written in an unusual “middle out” style of translating typed Python to C++, but right now we don’t need too much help with C++.

      Skills desired:

      • Good at testing and hacking (making things work) – i.e. diving into a medium-size, unfamiliar codebase, with LOTS of tests
      • Good communication skills, e.g. on Github issues and Zulip
      • Know shell and Python pretty well (this work will make you better at both!)
      • Probably helpful: knowing any statically typed language, or MyPy (which we use)
      • Bonus points: if you’ve written a parser or a toy interpreter (e.g. Crafting Interpreters), or know an ML-style language (OCaml, Rust).
      • Unix syscalls / fundamentals

Everything about the project is open, so please take a look and contact me at andy@oilshell.org if interested. We can chat online or do a video call (I’m based in the USA). We can also arrange a code walkthrough or paid “trial period”. We want people who will have fun working on these problems!
