This is not the first time I hear about Amazon being awesome at customer service, but I always thought they did all the good stuff because the blog post about whatever fuckup happened went viral (and usually it’d be someone stealing the account).

I don’t use AWS a lot (just Glacier as a backup for some of my webapps db) but I definitely look forward to ever having to use it for something more serious!

      AWS is great. Except…

That’s been what I’ve seen too. Annoyingly, AWS won’t let you set a maximum monthly bill threshold on your account. That would save so much heartache.

The best you can do - and something everything should do if they have an AWS account seriously for real go do it now - is to create a billing alarm. Mine is at a very low threshold; I’d rather hear chatty alerts than end up with an AWS account dedicated to mining Buttcoins.

This is from 2012: 3 years ago! I wonder if Google has addressed the issue since then.

Can’t you use a prepaid credit card or similar? Just put $50/month on it or something?

Unfortunately no, because they do post-billing, and will continue to let you rack up charges even if your card on file can’t be charged. You just get those charges sent in an invoice, which you’re required to pay. If you don’t, they could eventually send it to a collection agency and ding your credit, or even sue you for the outstanding balance, though it’s likely they wouldn’t bother for smaller amounts.
