The thing is, while we don’t need to use so much data for a web page, for 99.9% of users they don’t care if a page of text takes 3MB. They would rather the page look pretty and include pictures. The only time it really matters is for remote and less developed countries where 3MB could be really expensive. I’d love to see more done in web tech for letting users choose how much data they want to download. New file formats like FLIF could enable users to download images at 20% quality while other users with high speed connections could have their browsers download 100%.
