Phonebloks is a vision for a phone worth keeping. We want a modular phone that can reduce waste, is built on an open platform and made for the entire world. We are keen on finding the right partners and people to build this phone. We set up an online platform where you can share your thoughts, ideas and feedback. We believe that together we can make the best phone in the world.

Looks similar to Google’s project Ara how is this different? (I don’t mean this in a mean way, i’m genuinely curious)

Apparently the projects were created independently, however it appears that Motorola/Google will work with the Phoneblocks community to provide a better end-result.

FWIW, I’ve been collecting notes/ideas start a blog soon to talk about alternatives to just ‘make it modular’. The phonebloks thing is interesting, but am less confident about it actually reducing e-waste as opposed to taking a better look at how we make electronic components and what efforts have already been around to try and make them safer (rohs2, electronics recycling, etc.).
