The problem is that all that is just a matter of convention; the only part that’s actually enforced by the system is that the port is, well, just a Makefile. Coming from Gentoo (which I’d always been told was ports-inspired) I was quite disappointed; ebuilds are still fairly free-form, but they have that little bit more structure that makes them easier to understand and work with.
