My initial thought was “jeez, no one can be this unprepared.” I don’t think I have a single password my wife doesn’t know, and (hopefully!) vice versa. But the more I read the more parallels I saw. My wife wouldn’t know what the AWS bill is every month, how to log in to the router, etc.

Has anyone thought about this before? What are you doing? I’m leaning towards the decidedly low-tech “manilla folder in the lockbox” approach.

When our first daughter arrived and we buckled down on getting all our obligations in order, we put all the critical data-related stuff (password schemes, logins, hosts, etc) in the fire-resistant lockbox.

That being said, all our financial institutions have multiple logins for joint accounts, so we’re both already in possession of the really important stuff. If one of us couldn’t get into the other’s laptops or needed to replace the router with one they could more easily grok, it probably wouldn’t be the worst situation of that particular week.
