    There’s another way to install exotic operating systems on EC2, without building an AMI: Start a regular Linux instance, plug an new empty EBS volume, install the operating system on the new volume with qemu, shutdown the machine and throw the Linux drive away.

    I did this with OpenBSD. I had hard time troubleshooting some network driver issues (there’s no emergency KVM console on EC2 so you can’t do anything without networking so you’d better keep the Linux image with qemu for a while) but it’s not as bad as it sounds.
