    That’s not “luck” or “sheer coincidence”; that’s what happens when you simulate/drill for years.

      I think it also helped to have a room full of people who were intimately familiar with the ship’s systems, on the other end of the radio. I’m sure they had a sim for this event by the time Apollo 13 was ready for launch…

        I often look to the Apollo missions as inspiration when I’m down in the trenches of some project. Everything they built seems to be so solid, so neatly laid out, so well planned. And not just the hardware, but the management of the missions, the training and planning. I think NASA has continued this tradition in the mars rover series.
