The proposed change says “Protections for existing registrants will remain in place, in line with the base registry agreement.” so this doesn’t apply to (current) renewals?

I have a few .orgs. This is pretty bad and will be abused. Why was this proposed?

        Their justification from the article:

ICANN believes that the contracts to run older TLDs like .org should be the same as those for running new top level domain names.

It seems pretty weak. The tinfoil hat side of me suspects someone at ICANN has a conflict of interest.. but we may never know.

This is going to hurt free software projects and other organisations as well. For example I’m sure debian will hurt from increasing prices for debian.org (if that is what actually happens)
