Pretty cool read. Android development has always intimidated me, particularly because I only own one device at any given time, and the feedback loop is so slow (although IIUC, with GSIs this is now better, at least on the userspace side of things).
To be very fair, this is very far removed from standard Android platform development.
Usually you have a perfectly fine kernel provided by the OEM that is generally (close to) bootable, so no custom bootloader required.
