it’s sad that a bs culture developed around streaks, because there were two genuinely good things about them:
the self-motivation aspect of “not breaking the streak”, which i suspect is why the feature was created in the first place, and
the fact that people figured out how to make pixel art by synthesising a commit history was just the sort of fun, playful thing i love about open source communities
Amusing to find out a feature I didn’t really pay attention to has a big “following” of sorts. The social aspects of GitHub have always seemed weird to me.
Also, it’s ironic that the author is glad streaks are gone, but happy the graph will now show commits to private repos, presumably so he can show off a bigger number.
It’s not that ironic, this sort of thing happens all the time in long-running MMOs. This change removes the previous maximum “reward”, and makes the new maximum easier to get. Anyone who thinks of themself as likely to be eligible will be happy about it.
I haven’t seen a lot of essays about how this gamification is upsetting regardless of its details, but if I thought that complaint were a good use of my time, I wouldn’t feel the need to wait for a feature change to write it. I wouldn’t mind it so much if it weren’t so prominent…
