    What is the cultural commentary?

If you didn’t know that 404 pages were part of internet culture, see the Jargon File. If, however, you were confused by the addition of the “satire” tag, so was I! I received the following message just this morning:

Your story Bloomberg’s 404 Page has been edited with the following changes:

changed tags from “culture” to “culture satire”

      The reason given:

      Automatically changed from user suggestions

      This is an automated message.

This caught me by surprise, and I suspect that most of the downvotes came from disgruntled followers of the “satire” tag. I don’t have any way of editing the tags myself, so I guess I’ll just have to watch the post flounder. :/

But why do I want to look at this 404 page?

I thought it was quite unusual to see a 404 page that was 3D-rendered and animated; it seemed like the site devs had put an inordinate amount of effort into it. In hindsight, maybe a bit too “silly” for Lobsters.

Yeah, I’m not sure the site really has a lot of posts which are “hey, look at this hilarious thing”. If it had been linked in Slack or something, with a context that made it clear there wasn’t anything important after the click, I’d have found it perfectly on-topic. A forum post really uses more of people’s attention, and I think that’s why the social norm has wound up being a bit different.

No idea whether you wanted that analysis, but hope it helps.

              For sure. Thanks!
