This is pretty neat. The cool part isn’t that the POWER ISA is open source, but that the entire toolchain is open source, including the HDL and the cell libraries. I gather these have traditionally been extremely secretive and expensive.
Did anyone ever manage to find out what the license is for the POWER ISA? A few months after the launch of OpenPOWER, I spent an hour searching their web site and didn’t find anything that told me more than it was ‘open source’.
It looks pretty bespoke https://openpowerfoundation.org/final-draft-of-the-power-isa-eula-released/
Thanks. It looks as if that’s from about two years after after I looked and about 7 years after IBM started telling everyone the ISA was ‘open source’.
