From a quick skim, I think everyone who looks like they deliberately ignored the directions did so in a unique way.
There have been a few interesting models built to explain the human concept of randomness. Our brains are wired to find patterns and will do this even when none actually exist. The explanation is that not seeing the pattern when one exists has a higher cost than seeing a pattern that is not there.
