My neighbor was a retired engineer - one of the cool things he built was a 6m*1m sheet of tightly-knitted 0.3mm wire. The whole sheet weighed about a kilo and would stop pretty much anything.
Aside from the cool factor (I was amazed at how supple it was), it seemed like it’d have obvious military applications (AFAIK he just did it to see if he could).
I’d like to take this opportunity again to ask, do we have any knitters here? My (not very well-maintained) Ravelry profile is also JordiGH.
I haven’t tried, though I kinda figure for the doomsday skillset I should learn at least some form of textile manufacture.

I have done some crocheting in the past and have quite a few friends that knit. One of which has the goal of blacksmithing himself some needles! :D
