At this point, Marginalia is the only search engine that should be allowed to index your site. Google, Bing, Amazon, etc are all crawling for their AI stupidity. Everybody should be blocking their crawlers.

Meta: While I use Marginalia, isn’t this off topic? As I understand, “web” is for web technologies not something on the web. Since tags are mainly for blocking, perhaps that’s less relevant.

Nevertheless, I recently discovered https://handwiki.org/ a huge wiki with good articles about technical subjects (explaining/teaching them) and haven’t shared it because I’m not sure how to present it (and the text block isn’t for submission purposes.)

I think cool wikis are totally on-topic.

I debated this, too, when posting. Ultimately I figured that the audience here would appreciate it so I posted. Maybe we need a new tag but I’m not sure how to categorize it.

I love the wiki but wow I hate the popup that screams at me and removes my text highlight.

There was a post about handwiki the other day: https://lobste.rs/s/fzjejf/handwiki

Edit: I’m not reading “hours ago” and usernames it seems, it was you who posted it two hours after this comment, disregard.

You can seed discussion with your own comment on the story.

I love Marginalia for browsing, but I find it useless for searching. I guess that’s a net win!

It’s just like being in 1999 again! :P

Could you clarify? How do you use this search engine “for browsing”? Are you referring to the “Explore” page that gives a random selection of sites?

                        yes exactly

Damn, they redesigned it. At first I thought it is a copy impersonating the original. This doesn’t have the cool “Publicity, Discussion and Events” feed. Overall, Marginalia is very cool and I find myself using it more and more over the last years

Old version still available at https://old-search.marginalia.nu/, though.

i’ve been seeing marginalia pop up every now and then but i didn’t realize it’s open source! learned quite a bit about searching and indexing while browsing the code, great stuff
