This is a surprising instance of a pattern in democratization of Internet-connected technology, where a common protocol leads to legibility for common folk, and network effects incentivize the development of adapters which export proprietary structures into this common protocol. (Is there a name for this pattern?) What surprises me is that the Prometheus metrics format ended up being one of these common protocols. It is simple, but I would not have imagined that it would find use outside of its original context.
