The thing that’s “8* more expensive” is API gateway, which you can use with or without serverless and isn’t strictly required for serverless. But it does indeed seem to be not the best deal!

You need api gateway to terminate TLS no? Almost anything real should be using TLS.
No - AWS supports ALB <-> Lambda. Pop a free ACM certificate on there and you are good to go.
Eh, pricing on ALB is complex - no per-request charges, so maybe it’s negligible, but not free.

This is a pretty specific use case to then generalize and bash an entire style of architecture.
