I would like to be able to continue conversations, but sometimes I suspect the people I’m responding to aren’t even aware that I said something, probably because they’re not religiously checking the Your Threads link on top as I do to see if anyone replied to me. :-)

I don’t know if people prefer not getting notifications and would rather not get too involved in discussions though, so before I send a pull request to enable notifications, I want to know if anyone wants them.

I assume that, at least initially, you mean notifications delivered within the site, not propagated to email, SMS, push service, etc?

I’d enjoy those, though I think it’s important that they be optional; I dislike sites that make me feel as though I have an impossible amount of catching-up to do, every time I look at them.

It would also be great to have a list of users from whom to ignore notifications; this is a very friendly community, … and let’s keep it that way by not letting people get in each others' faces. :) But I wouldn’t hold up an initial release on that feature; there’s no point unless people like notifications in the first place.

Oh heavens, no nothing of the sort. Just a tiny little number at the top of the page that counts how many replies you have. Once you click on it, you’re taken to the replies and the number vanishes. Kind of like Reddit.

      Opt-in or opt-out?

      Let’s call that “phase 2”. :P

I have no preference there. If Lobsters were a big company, then opt in but with a first time popup inviting you to. But it’s got basically no negative perception impact, it just happens to not be a thing everyone wants. So I see opt out as being done here.
