It’s incredible how much more expensive compute cost in AWS is compared to other providers. If I found the correct cloud server that they were using (CCX33 on Hetzner), they were paying $ 0.0867 USD/hr. An AWS t4g.2xlarge in the US East region (the cheapest 8 core, 32GB RAM instance I could find) runs $0.2688 USD/hr. Thats a staggering difference in cost per hour.

Every time I look, I’m surprised by the difference also. Granted, you’re comparing the highest-priced “reasonable” provider against the very lowest-priced “reputable” provider for compute alone. So it’s exactly the scenario where the difference will be most pronounced. But Hetzner is nice to use (i.e. their control panel and API are both sane, IMO) and I find them a little easier to deal with administratively when I have a question than I do Amazon.

For my own needs, I’ve taken to writing scripts that’ll run just fine against instances on Amazon, Azure, Linode, DO and Hetzner. I almost always wind up using them against Linode or Hetzner unless a client has requested something specific that’s not one of those two.
