    The stacking context rule is a fun quirk of CSS, and one that, in my own work, required me to think with portals in a small React project where a modal wasn’t overlaying the Wordpress admin panel entirely, because when inserted beneath the React root it was stuck in a lower stacking context.

        I think that z-index is one of those things that’s super weird but where any alternative would also have its own share of bizarre weirdness.
