The site is formatted poorly, but the TL;DR is the performance hit with dmcrypt-luks isn’t so bad, and better than encrypting your home directory with ecryptfs. (The default algorithm for dmcrypt-luks on Ubuntu 13.10 is aes256-xts-plain64; I’m not sure what it is for ecryptfs except the inconsistent information I’ve found doing a quick search.)
