The problem with Uncle Bob’s writeup here (and one completely addressed in the excellent essay by michaelochurch) is that it completely neglects how we as professionals ought to be treated.

We cannot make progress until our value is recognized, both by ourselves and the rest of society. Otherwise, we continue the status quo Morlock-Eloi relationship that Uncle Bob (and many of us) find as unpalatable.

The depth of our dependence upon software is complete. Our society requires software in order to function; even at the most detailed level. Without software, quite frankly, and quite literally, we all die.

Well, that’s a bit ridiculous. Society functioned without software before. Some countries, OMG, still function without software. It would be a rough transition, but some people are going to make it just fine.

All of this sounds nice and all but in the end I don’t see how it’s different than the media companies not understanding that they can’t stop piracy. It’s all just bits. There is no place to apply regulation or governance when it comes to software. A child in another country can write a working program with zero certificate. How can you stop that?? How can you standardize that?
