I’m reminded of the dichotomy between strategies and tactics. Observability is a strategy; it’s a guiding ideal towards large nebulous goals. Monitoring is a tactic; it’s a specific methodology for achieving concrete improvements.
This is a pretty good analogy, with the “I want my stuff to provide a good service to its users” being the strategic goal, and Observability being a part of the overall strategy (although knowledge of what’s borked is half the battle).
