Good explanation – one thing kind of irked me though. Why does anyone bother mentioning the OSI model in relation to anything these days? I can’t imagine that’s anything but pointlessly confusing if you’re a newbie to this.

Wow, that site of the author’s has a lot of tutorials on other topics, and they are similarly thorough.
In the HTTP series, after this page on Basics, there is also State Management, Authentication, and SSL.

OSI is probably an academic requirement - if you don’t mention it you don’t get the OSI mark ;~)
