Many years ago I worked on the HiRes particle physics experiment, and all of our particle detection hardware was VME based (using VxWorks as the OS).
I ended up writing a VME -> PCI device driver for a real-time Linux control board that we were replacing the VxWorks control board with.
It was super interesting and fun to work with, this really brings back memories, thanks!
