Phoenix ships with quite a few bells and whistles. Whenever you fire up mix phx.new to create a new web application, forty six files are created and spread across thirty directories!

This can be overwhelming to developers new to Phoenix.

You bet! I really like Elixir, but I’ve been building my simple applications with Plug directly, because Phoenix feels far more daunting. Hopefully this makes it less so.

Someone pointed out in a previous discussion that some of the GitHub links in this article are out of date. I’ll try to replace them with permalinks soon.

        I really enjoyed reading this!

It made me realize that I need to spend a lot more time learning Elixir itself and familiarizing myself more with how Phoenix works. I learned Ruby itself pretty well years before I really touched Rails and I think that’s helped me a lot with understanding the how and why of some magic, but I haven’t taken the time to do the same with Phoenix.
