Zuse is quite a historical character. This rediscovered Z4 manual is pretty cool, but the Z1 replica in the German Museum of Technology is, to my sensibilities, even cooler. Definitely straddles the gap between Babbage and Turing. Also, his Calculating Space paper prefigures cellular automata and “digital physics” – like an independent version of what von Neumann was up to, decades later.
Agreed! I’d never heard of Zuse before stumbling across the exhibit by chance in the Museum of Technology. The whole museum is great, definitely on the list of what to see if one ever visits Berlin.
