      Bit of a tangent: I find it really interesting how the authors’ design philosophy arises from their living environment. Where most people end up in open hardware/software for ideological reasons, these folks ended up there because they live on a sailboat and:

      • their power is limited - macbooks are power hungry, most consumer apps are power hungry
      • the air is full of corrosive salt water - most macbook parts are not user-replaceable
      • their internet is limited - many proprietary tools like photoshop refuse to run without regular 100mb+ updates

      So they moved towards using repairable, low-power hardware and writing their own lean open-source tools as a matter of practical necessity.
