This reads like a list of items the OpenBSD developers have been working on for the last 15 years or so.

      You mean us “masturbating monkeys”?

        Well, you did harden it.

I thought this was a very well-presented non-technical summary of an important but very technical story. Kudos to the Post.

You know, there’s an unwritten rule that says there’s one ingredient that will guarantee you an audience: conflict. People just love to watch conflicts unfold. You see it everywhere on TV and the Internet, so to me it looks like the Washington Post is proving my point here, with the tone and contents of an article like this. Despicable.

“Let’s not really focus on the subject, let’s just focus on the people and play them, and their arguments, against each other.” That’s what you see here. Totally disregarding Linux, totally disregarding the fact that most people without a technical background hardly know how we usually work together and talk, sometimes even verbally battle on mailing lists and bugtrackers. Let’s just feed the conflict machine instead. Let’s bring in morals too, so that people who have respect for each other’s feelings (which actually most of us do already, it’s just not the pivotal point) will also get a chance to complain. Let’s just play people out against each other and watch the mayhem unfold. Modern click-bait journalism in a nutshell and people still fall for it.

It’s a trick, people. They feed on conflict. Stop letting them use you. It ruins the discourse for everyone.

I like this for exposing Linus' vile words to an audience beyond kernel maintainers. Though, it does seem almost apologetic, it’s a decent start.

I wonder if there is any other profession where such hate speech would be tolerated the way it is in our community.

For the record, I’ve never had a conversation with him - just the misfortune of reading his replies to knowledgable people donating their time and trying to help.
