I’m looking for Experimental Evidence on what the best code line length for comprehension is.
The above link is the best I have seen, but is more focused on general reading rather than code comprehension.
I haven’t seen many studies myself, but I have recently begun to strictly stick to the traditional 80-character line limit because I think the 50-75 character limit for print may actually apply to code as well. In fact, since I have switched, I’ve been very happy with it, even though I had to break a lot of lines that were long. (My previous limit was 120 characters.)
But again, personal opinion, no real data to back it up.
