I have mixed feelings about this:

      • On the one hand open sourcing this has been a long time coming. Good for them for moving forward with that promise, even if only a little. Also dogfooding can be a good thing.
      • On the other hand it sounds a lot like they are still putting it off until it works “right”, i.e. when they think it is finished. This inevitably reduces the scope of what can be contributed.

When it does open up it will still be Mac only, and, even worse, now the workflow to contribute will be Mac only too! That will hold back the one thing I’m most looking forward to: the community being free to port this to Linux. If the sources aren’t posted with a contributor workflow that works outside of the dogfood one getting it ported is going to be that much harder.

Similarly, it will be harder for me to contribute accessibility support if I have to do it from inside Zed. I’m not hopeful that the Zed team itself will spend any significant time on accessibility.

This is the first I’m hearing of Zed. Sounds like a super interesting set of ideas for an editor. Can’t wait to see where it goes.

https://changelog.com/podcast/531 is a good listen about the history and plans for the future, if you’re interested in delving a little further into it

Concurrent multi-developer work on a single source/project file is certainly a valuable addition to the SDLC workflow.

I hope they have a way to solicit feedback and ideate with a larger community – on how to commercialize their work/services while keeping the editor open source and free.

I initially thought it’s other zed and wondering what it’s there to open source.

I have been following this editor for a while, and this looks super interesting where they are headed. I had always wondered what were they going to do new.

Would love to see their developments in the area of GPU abstraction, with the goal to run cross-platform. Have many thoughts on this. Maybe this opening of the development is going to be a good opportunity to communicate?
