  2. 6

Without question, the most important change:

Added the -d flag (limit display depth) to du(1).

Pre-ordering is great - I’ve received my disks up to a week before release date in the past.

Not to mention the great art work and stickers :~)

      1. 1

The artwork for this release is really really great!

      2. 1

Looks like they’ve fixed some of the issues I had in 5.6 with regards to hardware support. Looking forward to try the new release.

They should consider updating their options for pre-orders though, we have 5 computers at home, and not a single one has an optical drive.

        1. 4

I checked my 5.6 CDs, assuming you’re motivated enough to find a means to copy files off of them, they contain everything needed for a PXE/http or floppy (heh) install. They don’t appear to include the install56.fs images for USB installs, but maybe that will change in 5.7.

          1. 2

The CD’s are a way of funding the project - it is not about providing install media for every supported platform.

Some of my OpenBSD CD’s are still in the cellophane wrapping them came in. I rarely use the CD’s to do an actual installation, but sales of CD help fund the project.

            1. 2

But to sspiff’s point, a USB thumb drive with packaging would be far more useful, though, likely more expensive to produce.

              1. 1

Isn’t posting CDs around very wasteful in that case? I find it best to keep a clear line between stuff I’m buying for the value it gives me and charitable donations.

                  1. 1

There are some funny tax implications that make it easier to collect some money via goods sold and delivered.

                  2. 1

Yes, but in that case it’s just a waste of resources, and you would be better off with a donation?
