I was excited to try this, but Snapchat asks for some permissions that are a hard no for me. In particular, it won’t complete setup without being given access to files on the device, which is often used for fingerprinting. Ah well… opsec is hard. I hope this author’s effort to reverse-engineer it will eventually lead to open source implementations. :)

This filter doesn’t work nearly as well on my phone. Is this limited to certain devices?

        1. 3

My naive assumption as to why that may be is that since Snapchat targets so many devices, the run time for the filter is capped at some millisecond of compute (around 16ms or 33ms for 60/30FPS, respectively). So if you have a slower/older device, then your device might not have enough time to compute the filter before it’s forced to “render” whatever has been computed so far.

For me the entire app hangs indefinitely when I try to use it.

            The future is exciting.

Yes, I admit I enjoyed the article :-) But maybe the future should be about using machine learning to fight climate change and other civilizational challenges, instead if this? But yeah, this is impressive :-)

              I’m glad to have a non-negative application!

                works for me.

I reinstalled Snapchat on my Pixel3 just to try this out but cannot for the life of my figure out how to activate this feature. Anybody wanna clue me in?

While in camera mode in Snapchat, tap on your face. A row of circular icons should appear at the bottom of the screen. The icon for this feature looks like a face with pronounced eyebrows and eyelashes and red lips (although I’m a man—maybe it will use a “man” icon instead if it thinks you’re a woman?). Right now I have to swipe from right to left three times on the row of buttons to get to this filter, although these seem to get rearranged fairly often so YMMV.
