    This applies more to some languages or technologies than others, but I don’t think it’s always purely an “identity” thing in an individual sense, but also a community thing in the sense of saying: this is the community I follow, participate in, etc. Which I think can be valuable; tech often isn’t purely a “read the manual, write a program” type of endeavor. There are evolving best practices, library ecosystems, notions of what constitutes idiomatic code, discussion groups for evolving the technology, etc. It’s fairly time consuming to keep up with it, so you can’t do it for everything.
