I think it depends on redefining CGI to not mean “state of the art CGI”. I mean, my year old laptop is capable of realtime rendering at least on par with the CGI in The Terminator. All they’ve done is move the bar up to Jurassic Park.
That said, I’ve wondered for a while if we aren’t on the verge of “updateable” movies. I buy a movie like Toy Story or Shrek, and what I get are actually the 3D models that get rendered in realtime. As my player gets upgraded, the movie quality upgrades as well. Many popular PS2 games saw rereleases as PS3 games, with generally the same graphics, but rendered at higher resolution and with better draw distance, etc. All the in engine cutscenes got better, too.
I will believe it when I see it. As far as I’m aware, many Pixar movies are on the multiminute to hour rendering per frame.
