Articles about text editors pop up every so often, such as this one. There aren’t any tags to cover such ones though, other than software if it’s announcing its existence, or vim and emacs. There is a bit of precedence, such as renaming the git and bitcoin tags to be more generic, and the merging of ipv6 into networking.

Might I suggest a slightly more broad tools tag instead of just editors?

I think tools might have too much overlap with the software tag, which is for “software releases and announcements”.

software is more for release announcements, not so much software in and of itself. Think of it as a “Hey, new shiny!” tag rather than a “Hey, here’s something we know and use”.

tools covers software devoted to making more software, and would provide a good place for discussing specific pieces of software that would help in certain cases, like on a post about dtrace or vim or whatever. It need not have any news component whatsoever.

You got my vote. These types of posts aren’t the most commented on, as I’ve noticed with my own request for a ‘terminal’ tag. I don’t know when lobste.rs admin jcs decides to add a tag, and whether other admins/mods get a deciding vote and maybe only a subset of users cares about tags at all. But because I’ve got my own $animal in this race too so to speak, I did want to say something.

Good point. I feel like there should be an official voting system for tags.

Speaking for myself with that hat, I’ve got no interest in being a decider for something that should be up to the community. I’ve never weighed in on whether a tag should be made, except in my capacity as an ordinary user.

I do like this one. I have more interest in hearing about new innovations in editors than I do when it’s some other type of software.

vim and emacs are pretty polarizing, so the functionality of being able to filter out tags decreases if they’re merged into one editors tag. git was renamed to vcs because nobody’s really writing stories about cvs anymore.
