I was just thinking it had been a while since the last Arcan post. I always find these really interesting and entertaining.

For a while I’ve been in search of a way to more effectively control my desktop experience and applications. I‘ve tried both QubesOS and x11docker and recently have been building something similar to SpectrumOS with Nix. There’s always something that makes it feel like fitting a square peg in a round hole. Arcan seems much more tailored to this use-case so I’m keen to see how it compares and if it provides a significantly better experience than the alternatives.

In related news, and in case people haven’t noticed, Arcan (and friends) recently landed in Nixpkgs (thanks to AndersonTorres). I had a bit of trouble with Durden since my keyboard doesn’t have a menu or right shift button. Before I could figure out how to rebind the default modifiers I realized my mouse wasn’t working either so I think there’s a more general problem with input devices :P (might be related to my user groups on second thought). Now that it’s in Nixpkgs it’s way easier for me to test drive and I look forward to putting it through its paces.

I was just thinking it had been a while since the last Arcan post. I always find these really interesting and entertaining.

The effects from the pandemic hit rather hard on both motivation, family and wallet, I have a lot queued up but I don’t exactly thrive on attention and outreach – the context switches takes a toll and I feel rather dirty self-promoting like this as is. All travel restrictions indirectly caused us (n > 1) to lose quite a lot of funding, there were otherwise interesting consumer facing products being built that are on hold.

I had a bit of trouble with Durden since my keyboard doesn’t have a menu or right shift button.

If it is just translation issues (layout) Durden tend to pick that up and queue for new keys. There were several NixOS quirks with permission, I think there is something in the discord history about it but I’m all Void/OpenBSD :-).
